Hey guys,
I had a couple of feasibility questions and this seems like the place to go.
This is my first grow in about 20 years. So a lot has changed. Back then, I ran a 1000w mh and a 1000w HPS, in a couple of small rooms….now I’m wielding a nice (245w true consumption) LED. I’ll likely add another of the same LED’s in the last 4 weeks. But even bigger than that, now there are autos. Wooow.
Anyway, I’ll be starting some autos soon. I’m leaning toward fast, compact genetics with high yields (Tangie, GSC, Amnesia). Pre-fed soil to be hand watered. I want to max out as much as possible, without burning any of the girls. After this grow, I’ll try to determine my limiting factors and adjust.
I’ll be in a 40” x 55” tent. I’m planning to do some LST in the first 3-4 weeks. Around week 3, I’ll put in a (first, second later if needed) trellis net. No topping, just bending and training to open up the future canopy.
Question 1: Is 8 plants too optimistic? Could I fit 10?
I can basically already say that my light will become my limiting factor. 8 - 10 plants in such a small space will make a dense canopy. I expect 10 is out of the question, unless I’m willing to sacrifice yield (undesirable).
I know: transplanting is fundamentally bad with autos. But I’d like to give them a boost in their short veg stage, and then provide a nice bloom soil for the flower. I was thinking of 3L (3 quart) pots with a light veg mix (fairly high N from Plagron but pH balanced for a woman), then at 3 weeks (extremely carefully) transplanting to a 15L (4gal) fabric pot filled with bat mix (also Plagron- w/worm castings etc), and heavily dosed with mycorrhiza. I’ll then feed (very lightly) with algae bloom, and finish with a flush.
Question 2: Is transplanting at 3 weeks feasible? Will they have a chance to become root bound in 3L pots, in only 3 weeks?
Question 3: Does this Growmix from Plagron sound too aggressive for veg?
Plagron Growmix Characteristics Peat, perlite, worm castings. pH (H2O) 6 – 7 EC [mS/cm] 1.0 - 1.5 NPK-fertiliser (12-14-24)
Question 3: Does this Batmix from Plagron sound too aggressive for flower?
Plagron Batmix Characteristics Peat, perlite, worm castings, Bat Guano. pH (H2O) 6.1 - 7.5 EC (mS/cm) 1.0 - 1.5 NPK fertiliser (3-15-4)
What i do is plant my seed in the pot i plan to use to the end. Yes you can transplant autos but I find the less stress the better. I use 5 gal fabric pots and I have a 5x5 tent. I have ran 6 autos at once and find that to be about my limit with space. Make sure if you (scrog), use that net, dont keep your girls too close at the start or you will have problems later with bunching and wont be able to move them because they are intertwined in your net. Anywho good luck with run.
Thanks for posting all the details. It makes it much easier to help. Here are answers to your questions: " Is 8 plants too optimistic? Could I fit 10?" Genetics will greatly depend on this so it's hard to say for sure. I'm willing to bet the Tangie and GSC will stretch like crazy while the Amnesia will stay squat. I'm basing that off what I've seen from others growing those strains; i haven't grown them myself. "Is transplanting at 3 weeks feasible? Will they have a chance to become root bound in 3L pots, in only 3 weeks?" Yes you can transplant at 3 weeks. Hard to say if they will be root bound. Although, if they do end up being root bound, you could break up the roots a little when transplanting (not ideal). The mycorrhizae will definitely help prevent transplant shock though. "Does this Growmix from Plagron sound too aggressive for veg?" You can try it but you may get better results with higher N in veg vs P-K "Does this Batmix from Plagron sound too aggressive for flower?" Just so I understand, Batmix is a growing medium right? So you would be adding more medium in flower? Adding the algae bloom like you mention will probably be necessary. It sounds like you know what you're doing and have a pretty good plan in place.
