Hello, I always see how many days old plants are. But I would think, it would be from when the seedling sprouts through the soil. Some start counting after sprouting. So what is the real story?
Days since sprout is commonly used for autoflower plants. Many growers will go by the number of days since sprout all the way up until harvest. For photoperiods, many consider the first 2-3 weeks the seedling stage. Often times the seedling stage is part of the vegetation stage, but some count the vegetation stage starting after the seedling stage. Unfortunately there's not a set standard that all growers follow there. Flowering stage for photoperiods start after flipping to a flowering light cycle - but some growers won't start counting flowering days until after also seeing pistils on the plant.
@Dr. Ozzy @Dr. Ozzy Sorry, I had PHOTOS on the brain when J was referring to the “flip” comment. AUTOS flower when they’re ready. It doesn’t matter if you’re lights are on 18/6 or on 24hrs. They go when they go. Thx Dr.
@Canna Montana all good! I was just making sure there was not yet another category of seeds I had missed and there was some hybird/auto/photo/Chemdoggo version of seed weirdness that was coming and the next new thing I was going to be unaware of...🤣
I think it's a metric to follow "generally speaking". Whenever you want to start counting. I don't think it's a huge deal if it's when seed meets water or tap root meets soil. Every seed is a little different than each other and one could pop a tap root after 5 days and another at 10. When you're a few weeks into VEG you won't know the difference.
What you'll need to pay attention to is if you're growing AUTOS you can expect them to start wanting to flower around week 3 or 4 (around day 22-30) will see pistils forming. Time to flip. If you're growing PHOTOS they start to flower when you switch the light cycle.

Agreed on the Autos starting to form pistils around day 22-30, but what is this "flip" you referred to with regards to Autos?
