I just finished my first grow and i'm pretty happy - I had a Cheese Berry and Jack Herer in a tent and a Blueberry in a pot outside. I'm happy with the 'high' and the totals. my question - as a person who smoked his first joint in '76, i've stuck my nose in a fair amount of bags. the good stuff has that smell, sometimes skunk, sometimes something else, but still has that smell. None of these 3 varieties have 'that smell'. they work, and they don't smell bad...but not like the weed i'm used to smelling. is this a function of home grown, or these types? is there a variety out there that will give me that nice scent?

I really appreciate your input here. I was on top of my ph (in my tent), keeping it at 6.5. I do believe i need more experience at the drying and curing stages, which is why i asked this question. I got these seeds from seedsman. the blueberry was actually a free sample so i don't know exactly which strain it was. the cheese and jack just say 'auto fem 1'.
I'm taking a month or so off and then starting my second grow. quite sure i'll get improved results!
thanks again
you have good strains there-
My first grow was "successful" in that I didn't kill the plants and got several oz. off of it- but the potency wasn't there- but, I didn't have pH dialed in all the way thru- I was using dry amendments and there is a time period you have to wait for them to break down, my soil was fighting me as well with some alkalinity issues that aided other issues, my first dry was a frenzied chaotic mess despite "prepping" for it, and the potency did come up a bit after curing 3-4 weeks....
It sounds like you have a lot of life experience you are bringing to the garden as far as expectancy and searching for "that smell"...which is awesome.
Homegrown should be the best quality as commercial operations are slave to scale- homegrown gardeners can concentrate on quality.
-Your genetics, seeds- were they name brand by breeder or generic?
I mean, like your Blueberry- was it Growers Choice Seeds brand or was it DJ Short? There is going to be a BIG difference in outcomes.
-pH- it does not matter WHAT strain you grow or WHAT nutrient you use- in soil, if your pH fluxuates off of 6.3 by too much for too long your plant can't eat. Especially if it's in flower with buds, it does not look that much different to the eye, but a lot of interior "potency" development is affected- if it continues thru Flower- it decreases trichome development-
-The dry- not mechanically complicated but you can nail the grow, have absolute fire weed, and degrade it massively with a not good setup for dry-
-the cure. Again, you can nail the grow, and nail the dry, and lose it all with an improper cure. Also, not mechanically complicated, but if not done right, you won't get "that smell"....
Please do not get down over the results of your first grow. And, grow again and take us along for the ride, the forum is a great place for questions as well as research. That search bar in the top right corner of the page helped me out-
Lots of tertiary knowledge from Mr Grow it's other channels (Youtube) and other partners available as well.
Hope this helps.
Have a great week Growmie-
