If the room that the grow tent is in is dark then you can leave the vents open without worrying about light leaking in. Some growers will close the vents for lights off and open them back up lights on.
People that I know tend to put the tent either in a basement or an extra room that isn't being used to control light leaks. If you don't have that extra space (which I don't), then I suggest running ur lights during daylight hours and when you are going to be the most active (for example 7am - 1am for veg, and 7am -7pm for flower).
