This northern lights is currently 3 wks in veg. The branches that grow out of each node site are growing very slow. We defoliated the fan leaves to get the nutrients to the v-branches.
What are the factors that cause this issue?

Defoliating plants that young stunt their growth. I personally don't prune/defoliate until after week 4 or 5 of veg. Also, some genetics grow like that naturally - straight up and little to no side branching. If you top or low-stress train then it will help the side branches grow.
