Im on a tight budget, I have been paying about .80 cents a gallon of distilled water and going through about two gallons a week + -..... What about using something like a brita filter and pitcher to filter the tap water??? Any thoughts or suggestions??? this would also save me the trouble of hauling the water down and the garbage up a group of stairs.

How bad is your tap water? You could check the PPM and PH of your tap water before and after you filter it through the Brita to see if it does the trick.
