I've been meaning to type this up for a week or so now, but I've seen some others on here create threads for their first grow, and wanted to do the same. Definitely have to tip my hat to Chris and the other growers on here for creating a cool environment to learn and "grow" for first timers like myself. I've thought about doing this for years, but this community has given me the confidence to finally give it a go. I'm using Chris's (Mr. Grow It) book as well as his supplemental video course to guide on me on most of this grow. I'm trying my best to stick to a simple setup and grow for my first time. These materials were the most concise and well organized I have found online to help achieve that. Cheers and happy growing!
Grow Environment:
Vivosun 4'x4'x6.6' Grow Tent
Mars Hydro TSW 2000W LED Grow Light
AC Infinity 4" Inline Fan
Vivosun 4" Carbon Filter
1500W space heater
5 Gallon Fabric Grow Pots (since I'm growing autos)
TaoTronics Humidier 4L
One Oscillating Fan
One Clip on Fan
A stupid amount of hydrometers for monitoring the environment
Grow Medium, Nuts, and Strains
Grow Medium: Fox Farm Ocean Forest Soil
Botanicare CalMag
Nutrients: Fox Farm Liquid Trio (Big Bloom, Grow Big, and Tiger Bloom)
Strains:
Seedsman White Widow Auto Feminized
Seedsman Sour Diesel Auto Feminized
Fastbuds Gorilla Cookies Auto Feminized
Seedsman L.E. Purple Punch (this was a last minute addition that I added since it's a freebee)
I germinated all seeds using the paper towel method, and they are at various different stages due to a bad batch of seeds I initially received of a different strain so I had to crack more.
Sour Diesel (Day 9) - I did a small soaking for the first time today (maybe 2-3 ozs at most), but before that I was simply watering with a spray bottle using RO water at a 6.7 pH multiple times a day. Once the medium dries out again I plan on soaking the medium completely for the first (maybe in 2 days or so). Definitely open to opinions on this though. The humidity and temperature is being kept around 77-80 degrees Fahrenheit and 65-75% RH. The environment is kept at 77-80 degrees Fahrenheit and 75-80% RH during the day. I drop it to 72 degrees Fahrenheit and 65-70% RH at night:
White Widow (Day 6): Watering with a spray bottle using RO water at a 6.7 pH multiple times a day:
Gorilla Cookies (Day 3): Watering with a spray bottle using RO water at a 6.7 pH multiple times a day:
Purple Punch: Yet to sprout but keeping the topsoil moist with multiple sprays a day.
I just wrapped up my first grow, and all strains are now curing.
Gorilla Cookies: Final yield was a whopping 5.5 ounces! I can't believe it. The buds look incredible. I plan on growing mainly Fast Buds going forward.
Purple Punch: She ended up looking really good too after drying and trimming. I plan on using most for edibles, but the yield on this one was quite high as well.
I appreciate all the help, and tips I received on my first grow. I definitely plan on sticking around, and lending a hand on the forum for future first time growers. I hope my journey helps others in the future. I think the main take away from this thread should be that Mr. Grow It's book and growing methodology for first time growers like myself absolutely works! Stick to the plan, control your environment, measure your pH and PPM, and try to be as consistent as possible.
Happy growing everyone!
Wow! Nicely done! I would never have guessed that was your first grow. Real curious to see how much you get from the Gorilla Cookie, some monster buds on that girl.
Congratulations on your crop! I had 2 sour diesels in my last run and I was fortunate that they did ok. Just some heads up for you new growers and watering your seedlings. If you only water the area directly around the plant, the roots tend to get lazy and not grow to search out for water because its immediately available. What I do is use a turkey baster and make a ring of water about an inch or so from the plant. That way the roots will search out for the water and have better development. The amount you use will depend on size of pot, plant response, etc. It takes alittle getting used to. Hope this helps. Good Growing!
Week 13:
Gorilla Cookies (Day 93): She is reaching the end of her life and began to show some fall colors before her flush last week. She has about a week left before the chop. Trichomes are all cloudy with maybe 10% of amber.
Purple Punch (Day 88): The craziest looking one of all my autos is actually filling out quite nicely. She truly looks like a weed haha. She will be getting the chop next week as well.
Congrats man! ....my takeaway here is, Wayze cams add, 1/4, mebbe, 1/2 oz. a grow...🤣
Seriously, just rewards good sir. Outstanding and inspiring grow.
The totals are in for the White Widow and Sour Diesel after drying. They're now curing.
Sour Diesel - 3 ounces!:
White Widow (1.5 ounces!):
Amazing job. Complete documentation and a Wayze cam. That sour diesel looks beautiful.
Sour Diesel (Day 86): She got the chop today after 48 of darkness in the drying tent. She looks absolutely phenomenal.
That Sour Diesel - Oh, my. Nice job with number 2!
Flipping my 1st grow to flower in the next week or two.
Week 11/12
I'm rounding the corner on my first grow, and I think 2 out of the 4 plants have been an amazing success. The other two have been decent, but the light burn on the White Widow especially killed their yield. Growing pains, but it does feel good to almost have my first one under my belt!
Sour Diesel (Day 81):
She is going to get the chop any day now. I flushed her almost 2 weeks ago, and the bud sites have gotten huge. The bud on this plant look amazing. and I am super proud of this one. She has her fall colors now. I'm a little sad to chop her down, but I am pretty excited to try her out once I am done with the cure.
White Widow: She has been chopped in is hanging in the drying tent. I have another carbon filter and inline fan running (on the lowest setting). I have everything needed for jarring. I'm going to do the final trim before throwing them in the jars later this week. Even with stunting her with light burn, the bud production was actually decent. I'll post final pics of all four plants after their final trim.
Gorilla Cookies (Day 75): She still has a ways to go, but is an absolute monster. Fast Buds is the real deal. My only regret is just getting 3 beans of this strain lol. She has been a joy to grow, and the bud sites are getting massive. I love the purple buds.
Purple Punch (Day 70):
I'm thinking she has a few weeks left also. I am still seeing some clear trichomes. I am thinking this bud will all be made in to butter/edibles, but we'll see after the final trim. I guess in the end it was just a freebie.
Week 9/10(ish) Update:
I reached out to Mars Hydro to get documentation on the TSW 2000 grow light I am running for the light distance on the various stages of growth. I'm not sure why I didn't do this earlier, but lesson learned lol. I discovered during flower the grow distance recommendation is 12-24". (Which is quite the range imo.) I went ahead and raised the light even higher a few days ago to keep from burning the Gorilla Cookies which is 3.5' at this point, and starting to develop some amazing buds. The Purple Punch and White Widow took the brunt of this mistake, but they both look to be finishing up nicely regardless. If anyone needs the documentation let me know and I will be more than happy to email it to you or post it on here if Chris is cool with it.
Sour Diesel (Day 68):
I think I am rounding the corner on this girl, and I am looking to do a flush here soon. I am seeing 80% or so milky trichomes (with a bit of clear and amber mixed in), and I believe some of the leaves are starting to yellow since she is reaching the end of her life cycle. The buds are absolutely amazing. This was a freebie from Seedsman, but wow I am glad I have some extras of these seeds. I am looking for recommendations on when to flush, but I am thinking any day now.
White Widow (Day 66):
She took a beating earlier on, but is finishing up great regardless. This is a very resilient strain, and I definitely plan on running it again grow #2 to try to fix the mistakes I made on it this grow. The bud still look absolutely amazing. The breeder recommendation for this one is 70 days (Seedsman). I am thinking of doing a flush on this one soon too. It has trichomes similar to the Sour Diesel.
Gorilla Cookies (Day 62):
This girl is starting to look incredible. I raised the light up to 25" or so above this one since she is the tallest in the tent, and I was starting to see signs of light burn that I saw on the Purple Punch and White Widow (see above for the info I received from Mars Hydro after doing this). The bud sites are all very large for this stage of flower, and they have quite a bit of purple in them. I am hoping I can give it the care it deserves because the buds on this one will be amazing in the end. The last runoff PPM was 897 with a pH of 6.3 so she is right on the money for now.
Purple Punch (Day 57):
This is an unruly plant lol. She received some light burn that I've mentioned a ton already, but has developed some massive bud sites. I probably won't run this one again for a while. It was a freebie from Seedsman, but the buds are a bit disappointing regardless of my noob experience. I'll still ride it out until the end though regardless.
Sorry for your loss, growmie.
Sorry for your loss brother. Those flowers look amazing my friend. That last pic has some white spots on the leaves, I hope you don't have an infestation as well. I can't believe the explosive growth. That LST really paid off and looks great.
Also happy to see you decided not to use a trellis net as I'm also not planning on using one. Such huge cola's and they're suspended all by themselves! Do you have bamboo on hand incase the buds get out of control thick? Just curious :) Keep it up!
Week 7/8 (late) Update:
I unfortunately had an unexpected death in the family so I haven't been able to give the girls as much care as I was in previous weeks. I had some self inflicted mistakes as well like having the grow light too close to the White Widow. Thanks to Chris (Mr. Grow It) for providing some much needed feedback on Patreon on the White Widow. It's well worth the subscription imho. I think I am still in decent shape on all the girls (even the WW), and hopefully I can round out this first grow strong.
Sour Diesel (Day 56):
This is the best looking girl. The buds are starting to look phenomonal, and she is the shortest stubbiest of all my autos, so she didn't have the light too close so that helped :).
White Widow (Day 54):
This girl has taken a beating. I knew that I would run in to some issues this grow, but this one was probably easily avoidable. After some help from Mr. Grow It and doing some reading on PAR outputs of LEDs lights (with this one being the first to stretch in flower) I discovered I had to light way too close to the plant. I have since raised it up, but the damaged has been done. She still has some beautiful buds, and I plan on letting her ride it out until the end. The buds are still increasing in density believe it or not. These plants are resilient even with a noob like me.
Gorilla Cookies (Day 50):
She had a big stretch, and is really starting to flower now.
Purple Punch (Day 45):
This girls growth in the last 11 days has been unreal. I thought I had stunted her, but it looks like I was just being impatient. She has absolutely exploded.
Can tell you're in the garden daily. Could barely see any rust spots to identify that magnesium deficiency excellent job getting in front of that! Excellent looking garden bro! Can't wait to see how that Sour Diesel comes out, it's my favorite strain hands down!
Week 6/7 Update:
Sour Diesel (Day 45):
She's in full flower now. Switched to feeding every other watering now.
White Widow (Day 43):
I ran in to trouble with this girl last week. I missed CalMag during the feeding, and since she is the closest to the light I believe I ran in to a calcium deficiency because of my oversight. I fed 5ml of Calmag 3 days ago and she looks to be recovering. If you look closely on the some of the leaves you will see some rust spots in places. I did a light defoliation as well. I'm hoping this will not hurt the plant or effect the final yield too much. According to seedsman this is a ~70 day strain, so hopefully enough time to bounce back. Easy to avoid mistake that I hopefully won't make in the future lol.
Gorilla Cookies (Day 39):
She just started flowering in the last couple of days. She has started the flowering stretch as well.
Purple Punch (Day 34): She is in full flower and has done quite a bit of stretching over the last several days. She is looking good.
Week 5/6 Update:
Sour Diesel (Day 37): She has been showing signs of sex since last week, but still hasn't started the full flower phase (I think). Each bud site does have quite a few pistols at this point, but nothing compared to the White Widow at this time last week. I hoping she starts to go in to full flower some time soon. She is getting quite bushing!
White Widow (Day 35):
She is in full flower and looking amazing imo. I fed her for the first time in the middle of the week (1/4 the nutes that FF calls for). I haven't seen any signs of nute burn so I am thinking I did a good feeding for my first time. The smell is getting pretty damn strong in the tent, but the carbon filter is doing a great job of keeping the smell out of the rest of the house.
Gorilla Cookies (Day 31): No signs of sex or flowering yet. She is getting quite bushy.
Purple Punch (Day 26):
She has started to flower. I might have stunted her a bit since I had to increase the light intensity a little earlier due to not having all the seeds sprout at the same time. Either way I am going to run her until the end regardless.
Updated view from the grow tent Wyze cam I posted 3 weeks ago. Really fun to see the plants grow from this perspective.
Looks great. Plants as well as grow set up.
Week 4/5 Update:
Sour Diesel (Day 29): I checked the PPM of the run off today and it is around 1500. I have still not done a feeding on any of the plants since I am using FFOF soil and the PPM is still high. Still chugging along strong and looking good after LST earlier in the week.
White Widow (Day 27): She has started flowering as of today. PPM is also still in the 1500 range. Holding off on feeding the first nutes still as well. Looks to be responding well to LST.
Gorilla Cookies (Day 23): Started LST earlier this week as well.
Purple Punch (Day 18): I'm going to start LST on Sunday most likely. She looks to be coming in strong.
Still learning day to day, but the plants appear to be doing great.
