I have a 4x4 and I do 6 comfortably. Depends on what strains and training I'm planning on doing. I usually like a little more room to play with and I also like to expand my canopy significantly most of the time. I've seen up to 10 plants in a 4x4 but it didn't look ideal.
The plant in the back left is bubble kush grew so much faster than the others, I switched to the pb4000 mid flower. it was growing up beside the agley I had befor so I put that little booster in there

It depends on how big I plan to grow the plants but typically I do 4 or 5 plants in a 4x4.
It will be difficult for your plants to get enough air circulation and light
