Get yourself a 30/60 jewelers loupe. The 60x magnification will show the trichomes very well. When the trichs are mostly cloudy, the buds are at full potency. When the amber starts showing, they are starting to degrade a bit, and it will give you more of a relaxed high. I usually start flushing when they are mostly cloudy, and chop around 10-20% amber.
when it comes to the trichomes i will do a few testings - meaning that when all is nice and clear for about the first week i will take a small sample dry and test // then once they get a bit of Cloudy i will again take a small sample and test // then at about full cloudy i will test again // i will do it again once i see about a 1% to 3 % Amber / Reddish color and again take a small sample and test // then once they get about 5 to 7 % Reddish / Amber i will then start my last flushing before harvest
this is my personal preference as to see just what kind of feeling i want or would like to have like feeling artistic wanting to do things - or just a chill out and veg mode - or just to be a couch potato and crash
if you look into information on the trichomes you will find that no matter the strain there is three stages that many will use - and most will say that the best is when the Trichomes are about 7 to 10 % for the best results
for me personally i do like to go from 5% to 7% before harvest - as once i did let go for some time longer and was about 20% Amber / Reddish in Trichomes and it was very HARSH and had a bad bitter after taste - kinda like that desperate hit of burnt resign that sat for a year plus -- YUCK lol lol
so i found that staying with a general range from 5 % to about the 10 % is the best over all with flavor and just the buzz in general // but each plant can show different results even those with very high amounts of White Frosting as its most often called and is most often very sticky even after drying
i will say just take a few small samples over the next few weeks that will not harm the plant ( low light bottoms is best ) what you are going for and simply test to see if you like or not and how it feels in effects
get a microscope on amazon. they are cheap. it syncs to you phone. you can see the detail and take pictures. no doubts what you’re looking at
