A friend of mine is saying the Scorpion Diablo is not optimized to be used in a tent but I was thinking the opposite because of how much closer you can get to the canopy (12"-18")

I am personally using the 650R in my 5x5 and it works great!
The HLG Scorpion Diablo is a bit of an overkill for a grow tent. IMO, you can get just as good results with the HLG 650R
I would get the 650R if growing in a tent.
