Yes you absolutely can keep a photoperiod short by doing things like topping and low-stress training. Also flipping to a flowering light cycle early (around 30 days) will help keep the plants small too.
This is my 4x4 with photos and autos. The 3 closest are photos. If you supercrop, LST, HST, SCROG, you can keep them pretty short before flower. 10 gallon pots
