@Cam Z Two grows in a row and have gotten very little stretch. i have read in a couple of places that close day time and night time temps can slow stretch considerably. Any thoughts? Thanks, Brad
Got it!. Yeah, I remember you asking about the scrog. There was another guy who had the same question about stretch but he got cuts from a friend. He saw his friends grow stretch but not his.
You may actually just need to step up your pot size to 7 or 10 gallons. If the roots have filled the pots before you flip they won't really get much bigger because the roots are restricted. Another solution to the veg time would simply be to step up from 4 plants to 6.
I looked back through your forum posts because I had this conversation with someone recently, couldn't find the post though. Was it you that said you'd seen this particular cultivar grown by someone else with a different structure?
I can't speak on the difference between day and night temps causing short nodal spacing specifically. Cooler temps make plants grow slower without a doubt, but I don't think stable temps would cause that personally. If you have seen it grow different for someone else I would start assessing the differences in nutrients and lighting first.
I know that giving plants excess phosphorus at the wrong time can cause stretching. I'm also aware that spectral differences can cause stretching or shortening of node spacing as well. A light with higher ir will cause more stem elongation because the plant thinks it's in the shade. Using things like kelp meal can cause stretching as well due to the extra hormones they have.
The difference between my keeper pheno in dwc vs living soil was extensive and I only changed one variable.
I'd start by comparing lights, then nutrients/grow style. Day to night consistency would be pretty far down my list personally but that's just me.
Currently, I'm using a Mars Hydro FC-6500. I run it about 50% around 24" during veg and gradually ramp it up to about 85-90% in flower at about 16". This run I have used The Gaia Green all purpose 4-4-4 and bloom 2-8-4 along with Power Si regular and bloom. I use Recharge every 7-10 days. Other than than, I use filtered water PH'ed to 6.5. I have watered in some Kelp and a couple of compost teas composed of worm castings, organic molasses along with a product from Build A Soil. I feel like its got to be the light or environmental because the last 2 runs I grew 4 different cultivars (Runtz, Punch Cake, GSC and Dosi) and had very little stretch from either of the strains.
Most people don't want a ton of stretch. Why are you looking for it in particular? Have you tried raising the lights higher during stretch? Intense light keeps plants shorter according to Dr Bugbee. What size pots are you using? Are you sure they aren't getting rootbound? Also, how long are you vegging in your final pot?
I don't particularly want a lot of stretch but this round I got probably 4-6" at most. I read all of these articles about plants doubling in size or more during stretch and mostly wondering what I'm doing wrong. The biggest reason i would a little more stretch is I would like to reduce my veg by 2 weeks and still get the same yield. I popped seeds in solo cups on 8/7 and moved them to 1 gals about 12-14 days later. I transplanted them to their forever homes (5 gals) on 9/3 and flipped on 10/8. So 2 months total from seed to flip. I guess I will try raising the light next round.
P.S. I am the one who has been asking questions about scrogging. I posted a few pictures. By the way, I greatly appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions.
