Hello All,
First Timer here. I'm having a lot of fun, but I'm worried about one of my girls.
Northern Lights Autos
Week 3 of Flower
Burnt Leaf Tips and Yellowing
Yellow plant next to one that's doing better.
FIRST THE LIGHTING SITUATION:
The middle one is the one that has me concerned. She's a lighter green. Her leaves are burnt on the ends a bit. At first I thought it was light burn. Started top down. I have a VipraSpectra P1000 in the center of my 4x2 and a couple of home made lights on either side with four 2700 K, 100 w equivalent LEDs (the home made lights are turned off in PIC for color temp picture consistency). Also, two hand-be-down "shop lights" with small "grow light" bulbs from the BigBox store. I had all these at about twelve inches until a few days ago when I raised them because I thought light burn. The middle girl obviously gets the most light in this setup. There is slight leaf tip burn on the darker girls too. If there is any yellowing on the outside plants, I've convinced myself that it is occurring on the sides closer to the center light.
So, most of that makes me think Light Burn.
But, the fact that I'm getting a little tip burn on the darker plants makes me think Nutrients...
Tip Burn on Darker Plants
I've had this slight tip burn throughout. Just a tiny bit, barely noticeable, does not progress, just stays at tips.
THE NUTRIENT SITUATION:
This is where it gets a bit confusing, because I wanted to be "Organic Guy".
I'm not looking for huge yields. I'm more concerned about taste and potency.
When I started researching this stuff, I was amazed at how much inputs people were using. I've been an outdoor vegetable grower for years and I barely ever fertilize. I just didn't want to mess with it on my first go.
Also, nutrients are pricey and the wife is already raising her eyebrow at how much I've spent to get into the hobby LOL.
The left plant is in 25% sifted compost from my compost pile and 75% Fox Farm.
The middle plant is 50-50 Fox Farm and compost.
The right plant is in 100% Fox Farm, no compost.
I didn't feed anything during veg.
When Flower started, I broke down and started feeding Tiger Bloom mixed at half of bottle instructions. I do two gallons split between all three plants. I've done this once a week.
Here's what makes me think that I might have Nutrient Burnt these girls:
On June 3rd, I scratched in about 2-4 cups each of worm castings from my own worm bin. I think, it was after this that I started seeing the yellowing in the center plant (the one with the most garden compost from the start. Also gets the most light).
That's the poop folks, thanks in advance.
Mr Grow It:
LOVE your YouTube channel. I've learned SO MUCH. LOVE "Garden Talk".
Please keep up the good work!!!
Thanks!!! That helps and makes perfect sense. I'm going to start feeding some more. Next run, I think I'll keep the same soil mix in all three plants.
You're right about the trellis net. I rotated these girls everyday until I put it up.
Something I hadn't thought of was that the more light made that plant more productive, thus made the plant use more nutrients. Interesting and again, makes PERFECT SENSE.
I, for one don't expect you to answer all questions here, so thanks for taking the time. Cheers.
Thanks for your kind words at the end of your post there. Sorry for the delayed response; I haven't been on the forum in several days. Your problem plant only has 400 PPM while it's in flowering - she's hungry. She should be able to take over 1000 PPM at this point. Most likely she's eating up nutrients a bit quicker than the other plants since she's directly under the light there. That's one downside of having a trellis net is you can't rotate the plants around.
They are in 3 different mixes, 3 different plants, and 3 different light levels due to how they are positioned in the grow tent, so it's really no surprise that nutrients are being uptaken at different rates. The middle plant should be able to bounce back though with the right care.
I had to wait a few days to do run off tests because my plants had just been watered.
So, Here's the results:
I use rain water.
Water going in:
ph 6.7, ppm 20
Left Plant -- is doing good the flowers are stretching
Water going out -- ph 6.0, ppm 713
Center Plant -- my problem child, she is the one with the above problems
Water going out -- ph 6.3, ppm 400
Left Plant -- The girl I would enter in the county fair. Nice color, buds seem to be stacking well.
Water going out -- ph 6.0 ppm 1560
Even the center plant that I'm worried about is doing pretty well and not getting worse, but I'd like to know what's up.
I'm still leaning toward BOTH a little light burn and a little nutrient burn. I raised my light and things don't seem to be getting worse. I've also watered heavy with just water, no nutrients since I started this thread.
On the problem girl, it's the leaves in light that are affected. If I pluck a leaf from under neath, there is no tip burn or lightening of color.
Let me go over my methodology to make sure I did these tests correctly:
I watered nice and slow until the trays under my fabric pots filled with run off then I just stuck my testers in the run off like this:
Is this cool?
I did a soil surly ph test. I took 1 part soil from each pot and 1 part distilled water and mixed, waited 15 min and mixed, waited an hour or so to settle and tested -- 6.3 soil ph in all three pots.
I was kinda surprised at the different readings from the above tests. All three plants have been watered and fed the same.
Thanks Everyone!!!
Looks like nute burn. Probably from the soil. Check ppm and ph going in and of runoff. Water each plant with enough water to get about a pint to a quart of run off.
Maybe check ph levels. Start trying to identify what deficiency your plant maybe having. It's my second year and now I just check water ph levels. Sometimes I use a milk jug right after it's been emptied. Dont rinse. Just fill with hot water and 1 tablespoon of honey. Mix it. Let it cool to room temp then feed with that mix and has brought my plants back everytime. Molasses works great tho as well. It's my sub when I dont have any molasses on hand. Good luck to you tho!!
