This year I really dialed in my Seed Starting game!
Very simple, Very Cheap!!
Jiffy (can get @ Wal-Mart) Seed Starting Mix (Like $5)
Good Worm Castings (Local if you can) ($$?? Depends on your area)
Perlite (not Vermiculite)
Approximate ratio: Jiffy 5 parts
EWC 2 parts
Perlite 1.5 - 2 parts
This mix doesn't have much for nutes but it will work amazingly.
Keeping in mind that when starting seeds, the density of the soil and air spaces available are what effect your rate of success (water holding capacity is not the biggest concern). You can get compacted soils without having something like perlite in your mix. Having something with nutes is not important in the very beginning because the seed has nutrition in the materials in the seed for the first part of life.
Remember, this is for seed starting. If you are looking for upper 90% success rate, soak/sand/crack your seeds first. If you do choose to soak them, use some fulvic acid. This really increases germination numbers.
Mycorrhizae products should be used during transplant or you inoculate the soil before use.
You can start feeding the plant after the first or second set of true leaves appear.
Good Growing.
