Assuming you're growing with organic amendments, generally speaking, a top dressing will happen before flipping to flower, then again 20-30 days into flower, and then if you have a long-flowering strain then you may need to top dress again 20-30 days after the previous one. If you can give us more information then we may have a better answer for you.
You would need to post some pics of the buds. Once you get into flower, you really should go off of how mature your buds are.
I have found that the pistoles turning and shrinking back is the best method for me. I don't buy into the trichome color thing as some change and some don't.
