Always get rid of dead or dying leaves as they are a vector for pests.
The understory should always be fairly clear so air can circulate and keep molds and pests from breeding on/in your soil surface. If you keep the surface of your medium moist to wet you will have things like mites. Any yellowing leaves should go. If you want to get more upward growth, you would start by defoliating the bottom and maybe removing some branches (your plant your call) down by the soil. Also some are unaware that any leaves touching the soil need to be gone. This is a major thing!! You can get diseases that are alive in soil and they can infect the leaf and get into the plant and kill it. NEVER let leaves touch the soil/medium.
If you scout pest on one major area/one branch then don't be afraid to get rid of it (if you think that will stop the punks). People forget that these are plants and unless your running some really crazy genetics that aren't stable, a plant should be able to handle the loss of a branch without freaking out. I would know, I had to chop the top half of a 4' tall plant just so it would flower . .
Goes back to buying the best genetics you can afford, as long as you know what you like/want. I don't. I have smoked bag shit all my life and now I get to find out just how different the strains are. Once I find my likes, I'll look for the real deal genetics. Then I will get to learn the difference between good and cheap genetics. I'm firing pink cookies "wedding cake" right now with an Amnesia auto. I ran a Blue Haze (not blue dream) from crop king. That plant was decent but when I bought my new light and did the flip it freaked out and froze in place for four weeks. I loped the top off it thinking it was a total loss as it was timing out (it was yellowing from the bottom up). Wouldn't ya know it, she flowered within two days. Now I wish I had started a little higher up on the plant . . so short story long, defoliation can be done whenever you think it may be right. Don't be afraid to try things. Mistakes will make you a WAY better grower than someone who has never had any problems! You have to have the confidence to develop your own ways and habits.
I remove large leaves all the way up until day 21 of flower. Then after that, I only remove what is blocking bud sites. These plants can take the beating and do quite well regardless of strain/genetics
Hey! I’m a first time grower. I’ve asked this before and you can remove large fan leaves If they are in the way. I have done this already and they are responding well.
You can definitely prune leaves after topping the plant if you'd like. If you post a pic of the plant we may be able to give advise further
You should do defoliations at different times.
