Hello Everybody,
I am a first time grower and poster. My state legalized home cultivation this year and I jumped right in with an indoor grow, learning as I went. I never checked the pH or ppm. I used no chemical nutrients and did a horrible job of controlling the growing environment. As I learned, I made adjustments on the fly and managed to yield a dry weight of 6 ounces from 2 White Widow autos. The buds are now curing and look and smell great.
I hope to do much better on my next grow. I read the book yet still have some questions, mainly pertaining to nutrition. I hope some of the experts here can help.
I will again be growing autos, but this time following MrGrowIt’s method. I will be using well water filtered to achieve a ppm of about 120. The water pH is 6.5. The well is drilled in karst geology dominated by fissured limestone so I expect the most of the ppms are calcium and magnesium, so I am not planning on supplementing with these minerals.
I have three questions:
1. When trying to achieve my target ppm values, should I adjust my feeding amounts to reflect the minerals in my well water?
2. I am a little bit bothered by the fact that in the seedling stage the actual ppms are unknown due to the use of organically fortified potting soil. Would I be correct in assuming that chemical nutrient feeding should begin when the organic nutrients are exhausted to the extent that the measured ppm value falls below the target level?
3. I like the fact that chemical nutrient feeding would only be required for about 6-7 weeks with autos using MrGrowIt’s method but would it make sense to eliminate the uncertainties involved in measuring the ppm values during the seedling stage by utilizing unfortified soil and following the feeding chart during this period?
Thanks for any responses received. I am loving my new hobby.
If you have concerns about unknown nutrient amounts in your potting soil I would go with coco coir. That is basically an inert medium to which you can add exactly the nutrients you want.
